• How can I find out my tyre size?
If you are looking for new tyres, you should familiarise yourself with the tyre size markings. You must respect the size, load index and speed index as specified by the manufacturer of your vehicle. There are two ways to find out your tyre size :

You should check the tyre sizes on 3 documents: the car registration certificate (gray card in Luxembourg, field 'Remarques'), the Certificate of Conformity CoC (field '35. Pneus & Jantes' and '52. Remarques') and the vehicle handbook.

Several standard sizes and some optional sizes may be fitted as original equipment on your car. You should also check the size on the sidewall marking of the tyres mounted on your car, both front and rear axles.

  • What is the EU tyre label ?
The EU tyre label provides important information about safety and environmental aspects of a tyre. Similar to the energy label found on kitchen appliances, the EU tyre label makes it easy to compare tyres in terms of wet grip, fuel efficiency and noise.

Did you know that tyres account for up to 20% of your vehicle's fuel consumption? Choosing tyres with a high fuel efficiency rating will give you more miles from your tank and fewer CO2 emissions.

  • Are winter tyres only good on snow?
Winter tyres have been designed for optimal safety in all types of winter road conditions (snow, ice, wet, dry road). Once the temperature drops below +7°C, it is essential to use winter tyres. The rubber compound of a winter tyre remains flexible at low temperatures, whereas that of a summer tyre starts to harden and lose its effectiveness below +7°C.

In addition, a winter tyre has thousands of fine cuts in its tread pattern. These give a better grip on slippery surfaces (ice, snow, wet, ...)

  • Do winter tyres wear faster than summer tyres?
The rubber compound of winter tyres lasts as long as that of summer tyres. In addition winter tyres give you more grip and safety in winter road conditions. It is important not to drive winter tyres during the summer season, and to change back to summer tyres as soon as the average temperatures climb above +7°C.

  • When shall I fit my winter tyres ?
Generally the switch from summer to winter tyres takes place in Luxembourg from October until mid-November. The average daily temperatures in Luxembourg fall below +7°C in mid October.

A german proverb summarizes well, when to drive on winter tyres "Von O bis O: von Oktober bis Ostern", ie from October until Easter.

Taking into account the peak season where more than 400,000 vehicles change from summer to winter tyres in Luxembourg, it is recommended to plan the purchase of winter tyres a few weeks ahead and fix an appointment in advance.

  • Winter tyres: what does the law say?
The Grand Ducal Regulation A-No 199 of 10th September 2012 describes the conditions under which only vehicles with winter tires (M+S, M.S., M&S) are allowed to drive on public roads in Luxembourg: black ice, packed snow, slush, ice and frost. This law applies to all tyres of vehicles M2, M3, N2, N3 (passenger cars, light trucks) and motorhomes, buses, trucks, etc. with a maximum mass exceeding 3,500 kg, where the drive axles must be equipped with M&S tyres. Violations of the law will be punished by a fine of 74 Eur.

The "winter tyre regulation" of December 2010 in Germany describes that summer tyres are not permitted when travelling on "ice, slush, etc".

In Austria, the requirement for mandatory winter tyres is from 1st November until 15th April and applies in case of "winter conditions" i.e. snow, slush or ice. Winter tyres are considered as winter equipment, only if these "M + S" tyres have a tread depth of more than 4 mm. As an alternative to winter tyres, snow chains can be used with limitations.

  • Are all-season tyres an alternative to summer and winter tyres?
Consumers ask for safety and mobility on the road all year round. The all-season tyre can be fitted on a second car in the household, one that does not have to drive in the morning rush hour, and on cars that accumulate low mileage in a year (below 8,000km).

It is advised to the "big wheeler" to equip his vehicle with the adequate and appropriate "shoes" for each season, i.e. summer tyres in summer and winter tyres during the winter season.
